Atomic Structure
Protons:
Protons are found in the nucleus of an atom and have a positive charge. You can find out the number of protons an atom has by looking at an element's atomic mass.
Neutrons:
Neutrons are also found in the nucleus of an atom, but they carry no charge. You can find the number of neutrons an atom has by subtracting the atomic number from the atomic mass (atomic mass - atomic number = number of neutrons in an atom).
Electrons:
Electrons are found in the electron cloud, also known as orbitals, or shells, that surround the atom. You can find the number of electrons of an element by knowing how many protons that element has; the number of protons and electrons are equal.
